OK... I need your help. I am in need of a location. One that is preferably in the New England States... has a college very close by... is small and quaint. Something that has character... a few great bars, maybe a country club-or yacht club-or rowing club.
I just need a name... and the possibility of picking your brain.
Don't ask me questions... all will be revealed soon.
Thank you from the bottom of my blocked heart.
I am counting on you to flood my blog with suggestions.... thanks!

How about Hanover, NH? Home to Dartmouth.
In Maine you've got the choices of some great towns near Bates (Lewiston), Bowdoin (Brunswick), and Colby (Waterville). They're up north a little but close enough to the things in the South to not feel too stuck. Lots of great little towns with the water close by.
For all that I thought it was "boring" southern Maine was a great place to do my 4 years in highschool, would have gone to college there or in NH/Boston if hadn't moved to Scotland instead.
Becca (animegaijingirl at yahoo.co.uk)
State College, Pennsylvania where Penn State is.
I think it fits all those categories, if Pennsylvania is considered New England - is it? Boy I feel like a geography flunkie.
Newport, R.I.
Beautiful!
New London, Connecticut. There's Connecticut College on the west side of the Thames River (as well as the Coast Guard Academy) and lots of rowing and sailing on the river and in the Long Island Sound. Then there's also the UCONN campus across the river at Avery Point.
As someone else already mentioned, Newport, RI is really nice, and Salve Regina University is right there by the water.
Those were the first two areas that came to my mind.
Of course I think Boston is quaint as cities go and that has Harvard, MIT, BU, Boston College, I could go on and on. Providence, RI is also another "quaint" city with Browne, Providence College and many others.
In Vermont, you have Middlebury College in Middlebury.
Massachusetts, Amherst obvioulsy has the large UMass but also the smaller Amherst College. Beautiful Williamstown is home to Williams College.
And Pennsylvania is not part of NE. NE is Maine, NH, Vermont, Massachusetts, RI and Connecticut. :-)
Good luck with whatever you are trying to figure out, can't wait to hear about it!
How about West Point, NY? Pretty...but probably not many bars...
Williamsburg, VA isn't New England (but neither is State College, PA, sorry, Teri). It's quaint.
I can think of quaint (Cape May, NJ). I can think of college towns and college bars (where to start...). I can think of country club (Cape Cod)...but all three? Sorry.
Sorry I can help....but if you were looking for areas that smell like fresh manure and everywhere you look you see Cows and Horses (and a nuclear plant) then I could help. Good luck!!
I'm stuck thinking of movies with this location, like mystic pizza (That's Connecticut) and St. Elmo's Fire. But having been in college in Massachusetts, I'd say Amherst.
Delurking to leave another vote for State College, PA. What can't you do in that town/surrounding area? And of course, you can walk to everything.
I would say any town on Cape Cod. You're only about 30 minutes (well, maybe farther, depending how far up the Cape you go) from Boston and all those great Boston colleges Sagey mentioned. My husband would vote for State College, PA also.
Middlebury, CT or Waterbury, CT (on the Middlebury side) You have Post University (small private New England College) huge UCONN campus in downtown Waterbury, and the state schools are close by. You would have the Country Club of Waterbury, High Gate Country Club, and Quassapaug Sailing club near by. The only Basilica in New England, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury is is here and with weekly Tridentine Mass if that is your cup tea. Waterbury is also home to 5 Catholic Grammar Schools (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel the best one Pre-K 3 thru grade 8), 2 Catholic High Schools, 17 Catholic Churches, and Holy Land USA (unfortunatley it is in need of repairs but the cross from I-84 is nice). You are an hour and 10 minutes from Manhattan, 2hours from Boston, and 30 minutes to the shore. Lots of airports, train stations, and regional New England stuff very close by. Very good location. Oh and the bars (the most important part) Plenty to choose from but my preferences are Maggie McFly's and Emmanuel's in Middlebury and The Hills, Vintage, and D'Amelio's in Waterbury. Good Luck!
Newport R.I. gets my vote. Spent Thanksgiving up there a few years ago and honestly did not want to leave. Beautiful scenery, great food, great bars, great shopping, funny accents. What more could you want?
Not in New England States, Gettysburg is the quaintest place I have ever been too. Could easily move there except there would not be much work for me...
Good luck. Waiting on tenter-hooks to see what you are doing...
Wow! Thanks guys! Feeling completely unblocked... now just researching.
Hobbit, I need to talk to you-but cannot find your email anywhere! Ugh! Darn those nights of deleting everything in sight when I am in a OCD cleaning mood. Anyway-email me.
Annon who had so much info on Mittlebury or Waterbury... can I contact you? My email is carlcris2000@yahoo.com
I will be sure to put all of you in the acknowledgements!
I'm glad others were able to help, as I have never been north of New York City on the East Coast...it's on the list of places to go, but...
Newton, MA...home to Boston College. Has the small town feeling but is right next to the big city life of Boston
Thank you for your husband and you and your family's service to our country. I can't begin to fathom the sacrifices you are making, but with humility I offer you my gratitude nonetheless. best-Hope
What's wrong with Nebraska? I mean, besides the 30 degree weather, the current rainy conditions, and the lack of a yacht club or a rowing club...on the other hand, we do have a pretty big college and a whole strip of bars right by it! (Imagine that)
Try Nashville, Tennessee instead.
Great weather with all four seasons. Friendly people. Big town but with a small town feel and lots of suburbs and country living withing a reasonable driving distance (30 minutes commmute), several colleges including Vandy and Blemont, both well-respected schools, and most of all a much lower cost of living than New England, especially housing costs.
there are other states???
I don't leave Tx unless taken captive but I hope you (can) have a lovely time in someplace not here.
Norwich New York, Cornell university. country club and a few good bars, especially the blarney stone. Plus it is beuatiiful has lots of community is small and quaint and just a short drive to many big cities. ( oh yeah and affordable too!)
Can't help on the block, but wanted to say how I love this Bob Seger song. You have to be TONS younger than me... how is it you even KNOW this song? Ah... it truly was the best era in music ever! What great taste in rock you have ;)
How about Burlington, Vermont. Quaint town with bars and I believe University of Vermont closeby. Located on Lake Champlain and the state of New York on the other side of the lake. Have fun!
I'd say anywhere in the south of Rhode Island (Newport is lovely but expensive and annoying to get to crossing bridges). It's mostly rural but a quick drive to the University of Rhode Island.
